  12. Part Four

  14.     Julian Bashir woke in darkness, to the sound of crying 
  15. near by. He felt a dead weight on his shoulder and reached up 
  16. to find the FBOLA's rapidly cooling corpse. Tears for the loss 
  17. of the faithful creature welled up in his eyes as he slowly sat 
  18. up and started untangling it from its perch. A deep sigh escaped 
  19. as he set it aside. He'd grown to love the little Fuzz ball for 
  20. all it's faults. 
  21.     Wrapped up in his grief, it took some time to sink into 
  22. Bashir's head that the sound of crying was coming not from him, 
  23. but from another point in the darkness. As it sunk in, he 
  24. remembered how the FBOLA had died, who'd been in the room at 
  25. the time. A wave of cold fury swept over him, crested and 
  26. broke, to be replaced with pity. Alis was bawling her eyes out, 
  27. sounding lost, frightened and alone. Just as he had so many 
  28. years ago. No one had offered him comfort then, when he needed 
  29. it most. He could not ignore it. 
  30.     Cautiously he moved across the room, trying to recall 
  31. where everything had been at the time the lights had gone out. 
  32. He got by the table and cleared the obstacle course of 
  33. furnishings without incident. Slowly he shuffled his feet 
  34. around before taking a step and then his foot connected with 
  35. something soft - Alis. 
  36.     In the next moment he let out a scream of pain as Alis' 
  37. claws ripped through his trousers and the flesh of his leg. He 
  38. jumped back loosing his balance to fall back, praying that he 
  39. didn't hit anything on the way down.
  40.     His prayers were in vain. The back of his skull connected 
  41. with the edge of one of Alis' occasional tables, he saw stars 
  42. then a darkness deeper than the one he'd been in before descended.
